At least 49 people were reported killed when a major earthquake rocked the Beechmont Baptist Church in Louisville, KY on Saturday, March 8th, 2003 at approximately 8:00:00 PM (EST) during an Amherst performance at a rock and roll show. The quake left 1,000 homeless, collapsing houses and causing wide spread power outages throughout Kentuckiana. The temblor which lasted about 20 minutes sent residents panicking into the streets in a riot.

Last updated 03/09/03 Bulletin: The following is a revised release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A major earthquake occurred IN LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, about .5 miles southeast of Roman Grey's home approximately 8:00 PM EST yesterday, MAR 8, 2003. A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 8.0 WAS COMPUTED FOR THIS EARTHQUAKE. The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. There have been some reports of damage in the states of Kentucky, Indiana, and the eardrums of many. The earthquake was felt strongly in Louisville, off of Wellington Street.

Tectonic Summary: This shallow earthquake occurred in a seismically active zone near the University of Louisville. The earthquake occurred near the juncture of three tectonic plates. Two named plates are being consumed beneath the other.

There have been no significant earthquakes near the recent event in the past decade. But professionals expect more very soon. So buckle your seatbelts boys, because it's a long hard road ahead.
