The band came to life as The Red Nails in august of 2002.  Dan had been trying to start a band with Andy for a long time and Becca had been trying to start a band with Andy and all three happened to track each other down around the same time.  After a few basement practices, a no show bass player, another bass player who did not work out the band played their first show within a couple of months of forming because Becca was entering the hospital shortly afterward for her first of two hip replacement surgeries.  The lineup has been in a constant state of change from the beginning of the band in order to fill the spaces that are created in the studio where Dan writes bass, and various keyboard parts to thicken the songs.  Ben and Natalie played with the Red Nails for a while until leaving with all blessings to pursue their own music.  Andy stepped out of the limelight in the summer of 2004 to pursue his art career and a move to sunny Minneapolis.  He is still active in working with the band on artwork and other pursuits.

The current band has altered the name to RedNails and have recently lost another member. Keyboardist Jamie Duvall has left also to pursue her own music and possibly a move to North Carolina. Recently RedNails were asked by Slint to play All Tomorrows Parties in England next february and are currently training new members to fill the spaces. The current live lineup is Dan on guitar/vocals, Becca drums/vocals, and Karri on bass. They are currently training a new prospective keyboardist and will be releasing a CD EP in early 2005 that was recorded with Chris Owens.
