Cortez was the brain child of Neil Dey and David Schneider, begun early in their high school years around 98' and 99'. The surf psychedelica meets brit pop saw its heydey in this band who played numerous shows at Primizie pizza, Mercury Paw, Sugar Doe, and Rudyard Kipling. The band saw a full length release recorded at Ramcat in 99'- 00'. The original line-up was:

Schneider was later kicked out and replaced by reknown art boat rocker Billy Bisig. The group eventually disbanded with Schrodt going on in a feeble attempt as a "drummer" for the Bloomington band Murder By Death, Bobby and Neil forming what would become Pop Venture, and eventually, Instant Camera, Billy Bisig...well the list is too long and pointless, Schneider??? whereabouts unknown--something called Heat??
