I always enjoyed Stephen's music and approach to guitar so I thought to play in a band with him as we enjoyed talking during class at UofL. Finally something came to fruition which was a fantastic amalgam of sounds. We did a fun thing for awhile. My old friend and earliest band mate Matt had moved back from Brooklyn and Alex, a dear friend from Of Asaph rounded out an enjoyable lineup. My goal was always to make something fun, but still kind of a mindfuck to the younger folks. Hopefully get them curious about bands beyond their realm of knowledge. Another goal was to not wear tight black clothes. Stephen brought his love for the Melvins, Nirvana, and Sonic Youth. Alex has always been into noisy mathematical rock like he did in Of Asaph. Matt and I were both listening to a lot of weird stuff, but tried to bring a combination of the zanyness of Faust, the Fall, and This Heat and combine that with the strut of classic rock like CCR which I was really getting into, also a dash of quality noisy rock a la Mission of Burma, Gang of Four, and Pere Ubu. The goal was to be able to do the little chicken dance that Mick Jagger does to most every song.
We played one fun show with Second Story Man and Black Widows. I think we only played 4 songs. I really enjoyed singing again and tried to get a bit more serious with lyrical content. We played a sort of class war song called Afternoon Tea which I sung, a song about John Glenn and the space age which Stephen sung, song about Ric Flair sung by Matt, and a skewed song that I sang from the perspective of an incredibly hyper-sexual woman. Good times...
Stephen did Lords and Irina for awhile, but I think he is just focusing on writing for the LEO. Matt is teaching math at some hippie middle school in Oregon and teaching kids how to 4 track it after hours! Alex is a railroad engineer and still working on mixing the Of Asaph record they did with Jason Noble. I am doing Parlour and Shedding.
I never have really gotten to be in a good and fun noisy rock band. I still yearn for it following this brief stint with the Shining Path.
