Purple Jesus was a stoner rock/rock and roll band originating from Louisville, Kentucky or as they billed themselves, from "Sewer City". The band was active in the mid to late 1990s, notably playing local gigs and sharing the stage with the likes of Local H, Fuel, Queens of the Stone Age, Karma To Burn, and Monster Magnet among others. The band re-formed in 2012 and released several studio recordings on their Reverbnation with intents of putting out an album. However their last known activity was in 2017 in social media so the status of this band is currently unknown. A bandcamp page was made with several releases some years later.

The John Asher performing in Purple Jesus is not the same John Asher that worked as an executive at Churchill Downs. The band also shares a name with a garage punk band from Detroit.
