The most punctual band in Louisville, Kentucky.

死 (Or Shi, pronounced [ɕi]) are a doom/stoner metal band, active since 2015. The band's official Latinized name Shi reflects the Japanese pronunciation of the character 死. In Mandarin Chinese, the character is pronounced sǐ. In both languages, the character means "death".

Initially forming as a trio, Shi's sound would start off as stoner/doom but by 2018 evolve into a quartet with a more generally abrasive sound, eventually releasing their debut album "Depressive Suicidal Stoner Doom" in 2020, a motto the band has since embraced.

History

死 began in the summer of 2015 with the band quickly recording a demo with music about witches, robot bikers and dragons. Their first show followed on 10 July 2015 at the Mag bar in Louisville, Kentucky (with Seawitch and The Mighty Auroch.[1] More shows would follow throughout 2015 at venues such as Modern Cult Records and Massey's in Danville, KY. In 2016 the band would release a follow-up EP in Robot Songs with more sporadic shows. The band would begin 2017 with a performance at The New Vintage showcasing 3 Songs, their most recent recordings.

By 2017 Jayce Wraley (Crown of Serpents) would join the trio to make a quartet and the band would play more shows in the Louisville and Lexington areas, notably appearing at events the likes of Doom Daze of Summer, Louisville Is Dead and many others. At the time the band would be working towards a debut album, eventually releasing this debut known as Depressive Suicidal Stoner Doom on 31 January 2020. A release party would be held at the Magnolia Bar on the same day alongside Swamp Hawk and Blind Scryer.

A follow-up in Basement Wizard would be released on 15 October 2021.
