Southgate House

From Louisville Punk/Hardcore History

24 3rd St, Newport, KY 41071

Performance venue & art gallery set in an 1820s-era mansion with a colorful history. The original Southgate House building was built in 1814 and would be the birthplace of John T. Thompson, inventor of the Tommy Gun. The Southgate House would start hosting bands in the late 80s by Ross Raleigh up until 2011 when the ownership was forced to move to a new building. New owners would take over the old building and keep maintaining shows and events there, albeit to a more sporadic degree.

The basement would be the main stage with a 700+ capacity while the second and third floors were also used as smaller stages. The upper floors were almost exclusively for art gallery stuff.

Raleigh would purchase an old 1800s church and rechristen it as Southgate House Revival while the original space would be rebranded as the Thompson House after the original owner's name.
