Furlong was an indie rock band with elements of punk rock, heavy metal and sleazy glam. Described as "anti-punk punk rock", "locomotive sex rock", "Louisville’s punk rock answer to Captain Beefheart" and "a Satanic CCR". The band's name derives from a horse racing term for 1/8th of a mile and members of the band worked at Churchill in some capacity.

Furlong was founded in 1999 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee while Rucinski was in college but would eventually move back to Louisville. Virtually any information on the bands early years is totally unknown.

Furlong's first known release was two songs on The Indestructible Gubbey Records Sampler Vol. 1 in 2001. The band recorded more material and was part of a nine-song compilation sequel known as The Indestructible Gubbey Records Sampler Vol. 2: When Gubbey Attacks!, released 1 May 2004. The label began to garner local press and some growth as Furlong and various bands associated with the label began to play out more. Furlong released a split 7" with bar guitarist Anderson in September 2010, with a release party at Derby City Espresso. Following a lineup change with Jim Hall moving to Pennsylvania, A follow-up 7" split with Sick City Four came two years later.

Furlong had recorded enough material for an album and had intended to release it, initially as an EP known as "Truck Stop Whore" and later "The Strawberry Bitch" before shifting into a proposed album entitled "Pony Up" that was never finished nor properly released. Furlong disbanded in 2015. Rucinski would go on to form Baby Bones while Matter was performing solo along with various other acts.

Along with the unreleased album, Furlong also recorded a cover of "Revenge Your Authority" by Indignant Few for the "Louisville Does Louisville" compilation that also never saw release.
